How was the silent cinema? A recreation of a silent film screening by Grupo Erlebnis takes us on a journey along the heroic days of tango and cinema. In 1927 José A. Ferreyra, the father of popular cinema in Argentina, premiered his film Perdón Viejita. The story goes that on that occasion Gardel sang the pieces live. A silent movie, the music was played at movie theatres in large discs simultaneously with the film. None of these discs survived, but after a thorough research work Gabriel Soria managed to identify the scores of three works heard in the film: Ilusiones, Pilchas Fuleras (Alpidio Fernández) and “Perdón Viejita” (Juan José Saldías and Osvaldo Fresedo). Armed with this information, pianist Santiago Chotsourián will perform live during the screening of Ferreyra’s movie. The event will be completed with a concert featuring singer Lidia Borda and violinist Pablo Agri. During this second part, the original musical pieces of the film will be alternated with others which are related to the topic. Oscar Araiz is responsible for the staging of the show, with lighting design by Dana Barber and projection of images by Ricardo de Angelis.
