Biography
Quinteto Pirincho's biography
“Pirincho” was how everyone called Francisco Canaro from the very day he was born, on 26 November 1888. A leading figure of the Guardia Vieja of tango, Canaro founded the Quinteto Pirincho in 1916. Over the years, as tango was gaining ground as a mature genre, Canaro enlarged his orchestra and refreshed his style, and also dropped the modest nickname of Pirincho to adopt a more serious name for his ensemble: Orquesta Típica de Francisco Canaro. However, the nostalgia for that pure sound of the heroic days led Canaro to found anew, decades later, his Quinteto Pirincho, with a view to preserving unspoilt the rhythm of the Guardia Vieja. After Canaro’s death, and always aiming to preserve the spirit of the earliest tango, the quintet kept performing. With the same spirit and instrumentation of two violins, bandoneon, piano and double bass, the Quinteto Pirincho is approaching its centenary with the same sparkle as ever.
